Egill Sæbjörnsson opens the show ‘In the garden’ at Gallery Hlemmur, Reykjavik next Saturday. There he will show a new video/sound piece and photographs. One of the works ‘We Are Flowers’ is an animation made from drawings with a song displaying a world full of contradictions, beauty and brutalism. In Hlemmur we will see series of drawings, which Egill says ´were sketches for a music video, but since never realized, ended up being an independent work’. There will be photographs from a work called 1, 3, blue & eleven’ which exists both as a video (animation) and photographs. Egill who is one of the ´city artists´ of The City of Reykjavik for next year is located in Berlin but has been quite active in Reykjavik´s cultural life for the past few years. Earlier this year he had a soloshow in Slunkariki in Isafjordur and he had another soloshow at the Cooper galleries connected with his stay at The Visual Research Centre at Dundee Contemporary Arts in Scotland. This year he has as well participated in few groupshows in Europe and in Scandinavia. Egill was awarded one year grant from The Visual Arts Stipend Fond of the Ministry of Culture in Iceland this year. In the year 2000 the Reykjavik based label Bad Taste (Sugarcubes, Sigur Ros, Mum) released a CD with Egill´s music called ‘Egill S vs/Muddy Fog – Tonk of the lawn’ which was rereleased in Britain under the label of Some Bizarre in London (Soft Cell, Einsturzende Neubauten, Mark Almond).
